Chair of Governors

Managing the school is a team responsibility. The Chair's task is to lead the team of governors in order to enable it to function effectively and efficiently.

Curriculum Governors

Whilst there is often an appointed governor (or committee responsible for this area), ALL governors should have a good understanding of curriculum and the school's performance in general.  

Each primary school governing board is encouraged to appoint a Literacy Governor and a Numeracy Governor to take an interest in the subjects in the school. The precise responsibilities of the Governor need to be determined by the governing board and so will vary from school to school.

Finance Governors

Most Governing Boards have a finance sub-committee to ensure these functions are carried out correctly. Visit Finance Committees (SchoolsWeb)

The PSHE Governor is a champion on the governing board for Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) with parents and the school leadership.

For your information, any school that has a PSHE Association membership can give their Governors access to this membership too. PSHE Association membership is £125 per year and provides access to excellent, trusted resources and support for the development of the subject.

Pupil Premium Governors

It is recommended that each governing board has a Governor responsible for reporting back to the Full Governing Board on how well the school can account for the provision for pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium and the Sports Premium grant.

Early Years Governor

It is recommended that each school with an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) should have an Early Years governor to champion Early Years in the school and to have specific oversight of the school’s arrangements and provisions for meeting the statutory requirements of the EYFS.

Equality Governor

Each Governing Board should have a lead governor to ensure that Equality is receiving proper consideration and that the governing board is discharging its statutory duties.

Safeguarding/Child Protection Governor

Each Governing Board should have a lead governor to ensure that child protection is receiving proper consideration and that the governing board is discharging its statutory duties.

SEND Governor

The governing board of every mainstream school is encouraged to have a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Governor to champion the issue of special educational needs within the work of the governing board and to have specific oversight of the school’s arrangements and provision for meeting pupils' special educational needs. The precise responsibilities of the SEN Governor need to be determined by the governing board and so will vary from school to school.
