Cycle to Work is available throughout the year to staff in schools, provided by Cycle Scheme. This scheme aims to make getting a bike simpler and more cost effective, with payments taken directly from your pay over 12 months.

The cycle to work scheme is a salary sacrifice benefit and offers staff tax savings as a result. Who is eligible for this scheme?
You can only participate in this scheme if:

• you are an employee
• are on a permanent on a fixed term contract with more than 12 months remaining
• reducing your salary through salary sacrifice would not take you below the National Living Wage (minimum wage)
• you are not employed by an academy, and your school uses Buckinghamshire Council as its payroll provider

I work for an academy and/or my school does not use Buckinghamshire Council for its payroll – can I sign up?
No, sorry. Your school needs to sign up for its own separate scheme and communicate this with your payroll provider.

Can teachers apply for this scheme?
Yes – this scheme is open to teachers as well as support staff.

What savings can I make using this scheme?
This scheme runs through salary sacrifice and offers savings of 25%-39% on tax, depending on your pay.

A salary sacrifice agreement means you agree to give up part of your salary in exchange for a benefit – a bike voucher – which is taken before tax. As a result, you will pay less tax and national insurance (as applicable).

Can I take a bike through the scheme just for personal use?
Although you can use the bike for non-work purposes, HMRC rules state that anything gained through the scheme must have at least 50% of its use applied for work purposes (i.e. commuting).

What happens if I leave the council / my school after getting a bike through the scheme?
Any outstanding balance will be taken out of your final payslip. In the event that this does not cover the full amount, you will be asked to pay the remaining balance.

Will using the scheme reduce my pensionable pay?
No – under pension scheme rules, cycle schemes do not reduce your pensionable pay.

I want to get a bike worth more than £3,000 – can I?
