What is a critical incident

Last updated:
A critical incident is any incident or sequence of events which overwhelms the normal coping mechanisms of the school. The emphasis is on impact, not just the type of event. If an event significantly disrupts safety, routine or collective functioning, treat it as a critical incident and follow the guidance here.
Typical examples include:
  • Sudden or unexpected death of a student or staff member (including suicide or suspected suicide)
  • Serious injury or life‑threatening medical emergency affecting a student or staff member
  • Road traffic collisions involving members of the school community
  • Violent incidents on or off site, threats to safety, or alleged assault
  • Missing children or abductions
  • Fire, flooding or other damage which forces evacuation or major timetable disruption
  • Traumatic events in the wider community that significantly affect students or staff
School leaders are responsible for putting appropriate plans in place to guide the response to significant or unexpected events. If leaders or staff feel an event is overwhelming or that usual procedures may not be sufficient, they are encouraged to treat it as a critical incident and contact the Educational Psychology Service for advice or consultation.
