Responding to critical incidents: long‑term response (weeks, months, and anniversaries)
Last updated:Long‑term actions should support recovery, reintegration, and review:
- Recognise that while most students settle over the following weeks, a minority may require continued support, monitoring, or onward referral to external services.
- Plan carefully for the reintegration of bereaved or significantly affected students, ensuring a flexible, sensitive, and well‑coordinated approach.
- Anticipate and prepare for significant dates (for example, funerals, anniversaries, birthdays, exam periods) which may trigger renewed distress.
- Ensure any memorials or commemorative actions follow school policy, are developmentally appropriate, and do not risk glorification.
- Review the school’s response, document lessons learned and update the Critical Incident Management Plan (CIMP) so that future practice is strengthened.
- Maintain awareness of staff wellbeing over time, signposting to supervision, EAP or reflective practice opportunities as needed.
