Additional capital funding to improve energy efficiency in 2022-23

Additional capital funding to improve energy efficiency in 2022-23

The DfE have recently confirmed that they will be making available additional funding and that all eligible schools and sixth-form colleges will receive an additional allocation of capital funding in 2022-23 for capital improvements to buildings and facilities, prioritising works to improve energy efficiency.

The funding will be made available to institutions already eligible for Devolved Formula Capital (DFC) allocations in the financial year 2022-23. This includes eligible maintained nursery, primary, secondary, and special schools, academies and free schools, pupil referral units, non-maintained special schools, sixth form colleges and specialist post-16 institutions with eligible students.

Schools can decide how best to invest the capital funding on energy efficiency measures. Where they judge this is not appropriate based on local circumstances, they have discretion to spend this on other capital projects.

The department has published guidance for the school and FE college estate (gov.uk). This provides sensible steps for reducing energy use and works to improve energy efficiency of your buildings.

The DfE have stated that they expect schools to spend the funding in the financial year 2022 to 2023. However, normal terms of DFC apply and therefore this funding can be carried forward for a further two financial years. These terms are set out in the condition grants spend guidance (gov.uk).

Further details and the allocations for individual schools are available here: Visit School capital funding - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

This is a school level allocation, as per DFC and therefore your allocation which is set out in the link above will be paid directly to your school/establishment. Please remember that all capital projects that schools wish to take forward require the LA’s approval either through the Self Help process for Maintained Schools or the Academy Capital Approval process.
